Pulsation in Dual Hose Pump Application

Pulsation in Dual Hose Pump Application

Problem: A systems integrator in Pennsylvania was building a new lime slurry storage and transfer silo for an end user in Georgia. The system included two 35 mm peristaltic hose pumps operating in a challenging lime slurry application.

Historically, the integrator did not always include pulsation dampeners on these types of builds, which had led to past issues with inconsistent pump behavior. For this new project, two pulsation dampeners were added to improve reliability. During system testing, however, one of the dampeners failed, creating concern around schedule impact and readiness for shipment.
With the silo build nearing completion and the delivery date approaching, the issue needed to be resolved quickly to avoid delays to the end user.

Transport of Copper Bearing Solution in Remote Mining

Transport of Copper Bearing Solution in Remote Mining

Problem: A mining facility in Chile required a reliable and flexible solution to recover and transport copper-bearing solution just over 2 miles (3.5 km), from the leach pad to the process ponds. The operation had to be performed in a harsh, remote environment with no fixed infrastructure, while minimizing pressure losses and allowing the system to be easily relocated based on operational needs.

Chemical Compatibility Diaphragm Failure

Chemical Compatibility Diaphragm Failure

Problem: A large manufacturing facility was using a polypropylene 5 gallon unit equipped with a PTFE (Teflon) diaphragm for a chemical application. The diaphragm material was initially believed to be compatible with the process fluid, but over time the chemical slowly degraded the PTFE, leading to internal wear and eventual leakage.

As the material deterioration progressed, leakage began occurring through threaded connections. Temporary fixes such as taping the threads were attempted but ultimately failed as the chemical continued to attack the diaphragm material.

The repeated leaks created reliability concerns and highlighted a material compatibility issue that had not been identified during the original selection.

Pump Inlet Cavitation in Power Gen Facility

Pump Inlet Cavitation in Power Gen Facility

Problem: A power generation facility operating an industrial water system experienced recurring cavitation and dry running events on a reciprocating metering pump supplying deionized water.

The pump was fed from a large, elevated vertical supply tank with approximately 200 feet of suction piping, and from a static design perspective, the system appeared more than adequate. There was ample static head, no obvious restrictions, and a properly sized tank.

Despite this, the pump exhibited noise, instability, and signs of incomplete liquid end filling creating concern about accelerated wear and potential equipment damage. The operating team struggled to reconcile these issues with what seemed like “plenty of inlet pressure.”

Poultry Processing Diaphragm Pump Vibration

Poultry Processing Diaphragm Pump Vibration

Problem: Steggles Chickens of Newcastle uses a 4" electric diaphragm pump to transfer chicken waste from a wash-down sump to a centrifuge. The diaphragm pump is suited to the application because of its ability to handle large solids such as chicken heads and viscous sludge consisting of congealed chicken blood. The pump's reciprocating action created vibration in the piping system which caused damage to brackets, fittings and valves.

Pharmaceutical Pump-Induced Pipe Vibration

Pharmaceutical Pump-Induced Pipe Vibration

Problem: The Boulder, CO Roche Pharmaceutical manufacturing facility uses a 3" air operated double diaphragm pump to transfer methylene chloride from an underground tank to various spots throughout the plant site. The diaphragm pump is ideal for this application because it creates enough vacuum to lift the methylene chloride 12' at an elevation of 5300' above sea level, even when outside temperatures reach 90-100°F. The reciprocating action of the pump causes the discharge pipe and other components in the system to vibrate and shift.
